REMOVING
YOUR NAME FROM TELEPHONE AND MAILING LISTS
1. To
reduce mail you do not want, you can sign up with the free Mail Preference
Service (MPS) operated by the Direct Marketing Association, a private trade
group. It will instruct its mail marketing members to take you off their lists.
Within a few months the advertising mail you receive should decrease
substantially. Please note that MPS will not affect most mail addressed only to
OCCUPANT or RESIDENT, advertisements from local companies, or mail from
companies with which you already do business, If you want to stop receiving mail
from companies with which you have done business, please contact the company
directly. - Your name will remain on MPS for
2 years. -- After -that time you may re-register. To
remove your name from a Direct Marketing Association member's direct mail list,

To reduce telephone calls you do not want, you can sign up with the free
Telephone Preference Service operated by the Direct Marketing Association. To
remove your name from a Direct Marketing Association member's telephone

To remove your name from lists sold by credit reporting agencies call: OPT-OUT
REQUEST LINE at 1-888-567-8688 The
information provided will be given to TRANSUNION, EXPERIAN, EQUIFAX, and other
national credit reporting agencies. Your name will be removed for two years. If
requested, your name can be removed permanently. 4.
The Federal Trade Commission requires telemarketers to remove your name
from their "call list" upon request when you receive the call. Exercise
your "Private Right of Action." Listen long enough to obtain the
callers name, company, address, and phone number. Then tell the telemarketer
"Do not call me again, put me on your do not call list." Federal
Trade Commission rules require the telemarketer to honor a "do not
call" request for 10 years. Financial penalties for a telemarketer calling
again can range up to $10,000. Remember: Take control of your mail and telephone
by taking the positive action stated above. Include the name of all adult
members of the household. Here are two sample letters to Direct Marketing
